myView Literacy is a comprehensive, interactive K-5 literacy program that provides a balanced approach to teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing using a collection of authentic reading texts and writing workshops. Connected Reading and Writing Workshops focus on teaching the critical skills and strategies homeschool students need to be highly competent thinkers, readers, and writers ready for college and career.
This unique "workshop model" curriculum addresses literacy, content areas, and social-emotional learning through project-based inquiry (which tackles social studies and science themes). Leveled Readers feature high-interest topics for both guided and independent reading. The reading selections feature cultural relevant examples with positive images of secular gender roles and special populations.
Each Unit of Study introduces the unit theme and essential question. The weekly sections build to the culminating project-based inquiry activity given at the end of each week. Each lesson features a reading workshop with an infographic, a foundational skill to focus on, a main reading selection in a specific genre (realistic fiction, informational text, poetry, etc.), a reading-writing bridge, and a writing workshop.
"MyTurn" questions give students a chance to answer questions about comprehension, vocabulary, and other Language Arts skills; "Turn and Talk" sections encourage working with a partner (if available) and build collaborative skills while encouraging self-directed learning. Reading sections include whole-group and small-group sections; Reading Bridge activities help students to study the author's craft, word study, spelling and language and conventions. During Writing Workshop, student authors participate in daily "minilessons" where they're immersed in genres through mentor texts and develop their own writing skills." Book Club" sets aside time for students to discuss the literature they have read.
In this Grade 1 level, phonological awareness activities occur three times a week to familiarize students with the sounds in the day's phonics lessons. Phonics minilessons have a three-part process of "Focus / Model and Practice / Apply." This grade level also features decodable stories that focus on the application of phonics skills and high-frequency words.
