Student Packet # 1674A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway This is the story of an American ambulance driver, Frederic Henry on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse, Catherine Barkley. Their relationship grows while he recuperates in Milan over the summer. By the time he is healed, Catherine is three months pregnant. Henry returns to his unit, but not long after, he is captured, but escapes by jumping into a river. Catherine and Henry flee to Switzerland where they live quietly until she goes into labor. After a long and painful labor, their son is dies. Catherine begins to hemorrhage and soon dies, leaving Henry to return to their hotel in the rain.
